If you’re looking for an under-the-radar game prior to the Thanksgiving week tournaments, look no further. A pair of teams on the cusp of the Top 25 will square off on Tuesday night when the Memphis Tigers head to Saint Louis to take on the Billikens. Both of these squads have NCAA Tournament aspirations, which means a win will go a long way towards improving the résumé. Who has the edge in this one? Here’s a breakdown of what to expect.
Saint Louis is sitting at 2-0 on the young season, although they haven’t really been tested yet. The Billikens have knocked off Murray State and Evansville — both at home — by 23 and 18 points respectively. Travis Ford and Co. have the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament looming next week with a first-round game against Maryland. But if they catch themselves looking ahead, they could be coming off a loss going into Mohegan Sun.
The first word that should come to mind when looking at SLU’s roster is DEEP. The Billikens are led by Gibson Jimerson and his 19 points per game. The redshirt sophomore has been lethal from deep, hitting on 43 percent of his threes in two games. Javonte Perkins is also back in the fold, and it doesn’t seem like he’s missed a step. The senior is averaging 17 a game after sitting out all of last season due to injury. And running the show is point guard Yuri Collins and his 13.5 assists per game. Not surprisingly, that number is best in the country.
On the other side, Memphis checks in at 1-0 on the year, but they already have a tough game under their belt. The Tigers took care of Vanderbilt 76-67 on the road back on November 7th. And their non-conference schedule is loaded with iron. After SLU, Penny Hardaway’s non-conference schedule has teams like Auburn, Alabama, and Texas A&M, amongst others.
DeAndre Williams is the go-to guy for Memphis, leading the way with 17 points per game. SMU transfer Kendric Davis is just behind him with 16 per game to go along with six assists, while Alex Lomax rounds out the double-figure scorers with 10. It’s a safe bet to say this game should be close from the opening tip. But the home crowd should push the Billikens over the edge and towards win number three.
Prediction: Saint Louis 75 – Memphis 70
