Villanova Wildcats – Losses to Iowa State, Portland, and Oregon

It’s now four straight losses for the Wildcats, something that was unheard of in the Jay Wright era. But they went winless in the PK85 Invitational, including a loss to a WCC program not named Gonzaga. And if Oregon doesn’t get healthy in its own right, that loss could be troublesome as well.

Villanova has the excuse of not having either Cam Whitmore or Justin Moore but the opportunities to make up for these defeats are limited in the non-conference, with Oklahoma as the next-best opponent. At this point, they aren’t a good team and if the Wildcats don’t turn it around, they may be too far out of the NCAA Tournament picture by the time Moore returns around Big East play.

Stanford Cardinal – Losses to Ole Miss and Memphis, win over Florida State

Usually, beating Florida State means something. But with them at 1-7 and looking lifeless, it’s the same as a “buy game victory”. The losses to the Rebels and Tigers aren’t bad but the Pac-12 program effectively ended the ESPN Events Invitational with nothing to show for it.

At this point, Stanford has no bad losses but is a .500 team with no signature wins. And they have Texas coming in a couple of weeks, as well as UCLA and Arizona State before to start Pac-12 play. If they’re not careful, they could be a few games under .500 and nowhere near the bubble picture.
