TV Schedule: December 3, 2022, on Big Ten Network at 4:00 P.M
Location: Jersey Mike’s arena
The Indiana Hoosiers go into this game with a 7-0 record. They are just coming off a dominant victory against a talented but sloppy North Carolina team. They are led by Trayce Jackson Davis. Davis is averaging 19 points per game on 71 percent shooting from the floor. Jalen Hood Schifino and Xavier Johnson are the two leading guards that are good complimentary pieces to Jackson Davis.
Johnson is averaging 12 points per game on 56 percent shooting. Schifino is averaging a measly 8 points per game on 58 percent shooting but is coming off a 14 point-60 percent shooting night against the Tar Heels. Additionally, this Indiana Hoosier team is filled with solid role players who know their roles. Players such as Malik Reneau and Race Thompson are very solid role players.
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are 5-2 going into this matchup. Their two losses have come against Miami and Temple. They are led by Clifford Omoruyi. Omoruyi is averaging 16 points per game on 52 percent shooting. Additionally, Cam Spencer is averaging 15 points per game on 47 percent shooting.
Other key players on this team are Caleb McConnell and Aundre Hyatt. McConnell was the Big Ten defensive player of the year last season. He will have his hands full with Johnson or Hood-Schifino at the guards’ spots. Hyatt is averaging 11 points per game on a horrible 34 percent shooting.
Rutgers come off a loss to Miami where they struggled to shoot the ball, shooting 37 percent from the field. Despite the bad shooting night, the Knights were leading at the half and were up till late in the second half.
Through the early season, they have one of the best defenses in the country. They are currently allowing 55 points per game, which is seventh in the country when it comes to allowed points per game. Additionally, they are very good at getting offensive boards, averaging 11.9 offensive rebounds per game, which is fourteenth in the country.
Both of these stats will be challenged when the Knights face Trayce Jackson Davis, one of the best bigs in college basketball this season. If Rutgers wants to pull off the upset, they will need to limit Jackson Davis in what he does best. That is a tall order.
The Scarlet Knights will be unable to stop Jackson Davis and that will be their downfall in this game. Trayce Jackson Davis will continue to go off behind an amazing supporting cast of Johnson, Schifino, Reneau, and company.
Prediction: Indiana 70, Rutgers 54
