NCAA Basketball: Duke, Illinois, and Virginia tumble in latest top 25 power ranking
17. TCU Horned Frogs
It’s been a non-conference of turbulence for the Frogs, dealing with their three best players (Mike Miles, Damion Baugh, and Emanuel Miller) each missing multiple games. But they’ve now won eight straight games, including a 75-71 result over Utah this past week. Miller had 21 points to lead TCU, while Miles had 18 points and four assists on 8/16 shooting.
When the Horned Frogs lost to Northwestern State in the first week of the season and some other close calls, they started to fly under the radar compared to the other top teams in the Big 12. But they’ve quietly amassed victories over Providence, Iowa, and now Utah, while Northwestern State has been a nice surprise out of the Southland Conference so far.
Miles (17.8 ppg) has played at an all-conference level, while Baugh’s return from an NCAA suspension has provided TCU with another key ball-handler and playmaker. And while center Eddie Lampkin hasn’t been a breakout star on the offensive end, he’s still been an impact rebounder and defender on the other end.
The Frogs have one more non-conference game this week against Central Arkansas, before facing off against Texas Tech and Baylor in Big 12 play. Based on how they’ve played lately, TCU should get back into the convo for top team in the league.
