Ryan Young – Duke Blue Devils

2022-23 stats: 8.1 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 1.3 apg

The transfer from Northwestern has played much more than originally expected, compared to the bevy of five-star frontcourt players on this roster. But injuries have allowed Young to get on the court, which he has taken full advantage of. Young is shooting a whopping 75% from the field, coming off a 7/7 game against Florida State with a season-high of 20 points.

The senior big man has five other double-digit scoring games for Duke, including an 11-point and 15-rebound performance against Oregon State to avoid what would’ve been a humiliating upset loss. The stats don’t show how important Young’s efficiency and experience have been for a young team that’s still looking to find itself and its overall rotation. Either way, Young has earned a consistent role in the rotation.

Courvousier McCauley – Indiana State Sycamores

2022-23 stats: 16.9 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.2 spg

The DePaul transfer has found his home in the Missouri Valley, leading the 1st-place Sycamores in scoring. McCauley has had seven points in every single game, including a pair of 30-point efforts in wins over both North Dakota State and Miami (Oh). He’s a volume shooter as well, making 38% from three-point range on 7+ attempts a game.

Indiana State won just 11 games last year and already has 11 this season, as well as a 4-0 record in league play. The big reason for the improved play has been multiple impact transfers, with McCauley leading the way. And it’s a natural fit too, as the team ranks in the top 20 in three-pointers, led by the former Blue Demon.
