NCAA Basketball: 10 under-the-radar transfer impacts of 2022-23 season
Cam Spencer – Rutgers Scarlet Knights
2022-23 stats: 12.9 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 3.6 apg
The dynamic scorer from Loyola (MD) was tasked with providing most of the offensive production when both Paul Mulcahy and Caleb McConnell were out with injuries. And Spencer did that, averaging around 18 ppg in the first six games of the season. His numbers dipped a bit but rebounded with 14+ points in three of the past four outings, including 14 in the upset over NO. 1 Purdue.
What makes Spencer’s production important is how efficient he’s been from the field. He’s shooting 50% from the field and 44% from three-point range while also having a 2.5/1 assist-to-turnover ratio. For a scoring replacement for Geo Baker, Spencer has been incredibly impressive and still will have a role in the offense even with those vets back
Brandin Podziemski – Santa Clara Broncos
2022-23 stats: 18.4 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 3.3 apg
After playing no minutes at Illinois, the 6’5 guard became one of the top scorers in NCAA Basketball with the Broncos. The sophomore started out as strong as possible, scoring 30 and 34 points in his first two games of the season. Podziemski has just two games fewer than double figures, including four more games of 20+ points.
The lethal scorer is making 38% of his three-point attempts and has six double-doubles. After losing star guard Jalen Wiliams to the NBA Draft last offseason, landing Podziemski has been as good an offseason find as a mid-major program could get.
