Power Conference Player of the Week – Kendric Davis

I am sure many of you are going to consider this an upset given that a player for a top-ten team did score 40 points this week. The theme for this week with the Power five players for me was consistency. Take nothing away from Marcus Carr, 41 points is not something that he likely will not do again this season and not many other players are going to be able to claim they have done that this year.

Part of me really wanted to give it Jamarius Burton, partly because I am trying to get brownie points with the site moderator and his love for the Pitt Basketball team, but the other part of me wanted to give it to Burton because of his sheer dominance in the game against North Carolina. He took that game over down the stretch and everyone in the Oakland Zoo knew who was going to get the ball and they still could not stop it.

If we are talking about consistency in multiple games this week then KJ Simpson and Davis were the two outright finalists. Simpson did not have quite the week that Davis did, so the Memphis point guard gets the nod.

Davis was already a superstar when he arrived to play for Penny Hardaway and the Tigers but what he has done in the new Memphis system is increase his scoring average by a full point per game. He has also increased his assist numbers by about 2 assists per game. There are maybe a handful of players who are able to score at the volume that Davis can while also contributing in the other counting stats.

The other thing that makes all his numbers that much more impressive is that Davis is one of the shortest players in Division 1. He stands at 6’0” tall but he can jump out of a gym and has zero problem jumping with the big men to get a rebound. His shooting percentages are not where he would like them to be, but he is very familiar with the American conference, and they will get back to their average. Davis will be on this list for most of the remaining games and don’t be surprised if he wins it again multiple times.
