Bracketology 2023: Dayton, Missouri and Texas Tech among week’s biggest losers
Arizona Wildcats
The Wildcats have one of the best non-conference resumes in Bracketology, having wins over San Deigo State, Creighton, Indiana, and Tennessee. Before Pac-12 play, they were the clear favorite to have the No. 1 seed out west, over the likes of Gonzaga and UCLA. But just a few weeks into league play, Arizona has three Pac-12 losses, including on Saturday at Oregon.
The Ducks aren’t very good but that’s currently a Quad 1 loss. The issue is that not only are they three games back of the Bruins in the conference standings but Arizona also has lost ground in the seeding positioning in March. The last thing they want is to be in another region for the NCAA Tournament despite its great resume. But that gets diminished by each loss in the Pac-12.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
The Red Raiders are in the same category as West Virginia in that they’re a good team with nothing to show for it in Big 12 play. Despite getting transfer Fardaws Aimaq in his debut and leading Texas on the road for the first 30 minutes, Texas Tech gave up the lead to move to 0-5 in league play.
And that’s an issue for them compared to the others in the Big 12 because the non-conference for the Red Raiders consisted of wins over Georgetown and Louisville, two teams that are currently winless in their respective conferences.
Despite being in the Big 12, where all the metrics have everyone as a top-60 team, Texas Tech’s NET ranking is around 70, which is nowhere near the at-large position and without a single Quad 1 or 2 win in the season. They’re the one team in the conference that can’t afford a poor record in league play but right now, the Red Raiders are in big trouble.
