Two Big East powers are set to clash on Wednesday night, as Marquette hosts Providence for a Top 25 showdown inside Fiserv Forum.

TV Schedule: Wednesday, January 18, 2022, at 9:00 PM ET on CBS Sports Network

Location: Fiserv Forum, Milwaukee, WI

Two of the top teams in the Big East, Marquette and Providence are set to collide Wednesday for a Top 25 showdown, one that is a rematch from back in late December when the Friars defeated the Golden Eagles in double-overtime, 103-98. In the head-to-head series, Providence has won each of last two meetings between the two, but has not defeated the Golden Eagles in Milwaukee since the 2019-20 season.

Marquette at the moment is ranked as the No. 20 team in the country according to the latest AP Poll, owning a 14-5 overall record, as well as a 6-2 mark in Big East play. The Golden Eagles are however coming off an 80-76 road loss at Xavier on Sunday afternoon, which snapped what was a five-game winning streak for Marquette at the time that dated back to December 27.

The Golden Eagles sport college basketball’s No. 14 ranked scoring offensive team at 82.7 PPG, a team that has four players averaging in double-figures – Kameron Jones, Olivier-Maxence Prosper, Oso Ighodaro, and David Joplin. With Tyler Kolek and Stevie Mitchell among the additional names to know, Marquette also allows 71.7 PPG to opponents and ranks Top 10 nationally with a 50 FG%, 60.3 2P%, and 18.5 APG.

Providence is ranked as the No. 22 team in country according to the latest AP Poll and enters this game with a 14-4 overall record, one that includes a 6-1 mark in Big East play. The Friars are also coming off a loss to Creighton on Saturday afternoon, which snapped a nine-game winning streak for Providence, one that dated back to December 3.

The Friars are currently averaging 79.2 PPG, while also allowing 68.3 PPG, and are led by forward Bryce Hopkins, who is averaging 16.2 PPG and 9.1 RPG after transferring from Kentucky this past offseason. Devin Carter and Noah Locke are also averaging in double-figures for Providence, while others such as Jared Bynum, Alyn Breed, and Clifton Moore are also names to know.

A head-to-head matchup that certainly delivered on the hype a few weeks ago, this showdown between the Golden Eagles and Friars has the potential to be just as good. As to who wins, I’ll say that Marquette avenges their previous loss, and the Golden Eagles win what could very easily be a close game Wednesday night.

Prediction: Marquette 78, Providence 74
