In the latest College Basketball rankings, there were two programs that made the top 25 but probably shouldn’t. Check out who they are and why.
Last week, a number of College Basketball lost at least one game, including several with two. There were also plenty of intriguing results, including from the last edition of the Big 12/SEC Challenge. Alabama suffered a loss to Oklahoma, while College of Charleston suffered a defeat to Hofstra.
Not only did the Cougars’ 20-game win streak get snapped but they fell out of the top 25 rankings altogether. And I thought that was a bit harsh, especially when there are other teams who don’t deserve to be ranked.
Here are the two that cause me the most issues.
UConn Huskies – From 19 to 24
At one point, UConn was the No. 2 team in College Basketball and had an incredible resume, beating everyone by 10+ points. Since then, they’ve lost six of the last eight games, including an 82-79 result at home against Xavier. Losing to the Musketeers in itself isn’t shameful but in the past month, nothing about the Huskies looks like a top-25 team.
I understand that only one of their losses was bad, at home against St. John’s. And the overall resume is still strong, with a top-10 NET ranking and 7-5 against Quad 1/2 opponents. They’ve slowly climbed down from 2-24 in the past few weeks but they should be unranked in favor of a Charleston that had just one slip-up and fell even further.
Auburn Tigers – From 15-25
The Tigers had two losses in the past week, falling to Texas A&M and West Virginia. Both are projected bubble teams and aren’t bad losses but this one is the opposite of UConn in that they never have had a good resume and instead, benefitted from a bunch of overall wins. To date, Auburn’s top three wins are against Arkansas, Saint Louis, and Northwestern.
All of the other victories have come up against the bottom of SEC play and overall, the Tigers are essentially .500 overall against good teams. They never were very good and failed this past week against okay competition. Auburn has a chance to prove me wrong this weekend with a road matchup at Tennessee. Either I’ll have egg on my face with this one or the Vols will do me a favor and knock the Tigers out of the overall rankings a week from now.
