Memphis gets swept by Tulane and takes a resume hit

Even since the start of AAC play, the Memphis Tigers have not only played with fire but had gotten burnt a few times. Two of them have come against Tulane, who is a good team in the AAC but one you have to be able to beat if you’re on the bubble.

This one took an extra five minutes to decide but in the end, the Green Wave pulled off the last-second 90-89 victory. Jalen Cook had 25 points, while Kevin Cross had 22 on 9/12 shooting from the victors. Kendric Davis had a game-high 26 points for the Tigers, while Deandre Williams had 19 points and 17 rebounds for the Tigers.

The issue with Memphis has not been the offense, as the arrival of last year’s AAC Player of the Year has done wonders for them. Davis is quietly playing at an All-American level this season, producing over 21 ppg and 6.0 apg. The problem is the defense, as they’ve now given up 80+ in five out of 10 league games.

That’s a Quad 3 loss for the Tigers, the first true “bad” loss of the season. But they’ve now entered the “needs to beat Houston” part of the season, as no other games in the AAC will boost their resume. But based on what we’ve seen so far, can they stop the Cougars whenever they see them?
