UConn Women’s Basketball had a big matchup this week at home against South Carolina. What were the results for the Huskies?

After beating Villanova in a battle of the top two teams in the Big East, UConn had a top-5 matchup versus South Carolina. But first, they had to deal with Providence, who is in the bottom tier of the standings.

Maybe they were looking ahead to their matchup with the Gamecocks because it wasn’t a blowout, ending up with a 64-54 victory. Forward Dorka Juhasz had a tremendous game for the Huskies, going for 19 points and 17 rebounds. But she and the team had a huge task on their hands, taking on No. 1 ranked and unbeaten South Carolina.

UConn took the game to them at first, leading by double-digits in the first half. But a late Gamecocks’ run tied it up at 34 at the half. The favorites, led by National Player of the Year Aliyah Boston, took a commanding lead in the fourth quarter but credit to the Huskies for making a late comeback in the final minutes to keep it close. In the end, they lost 81-77, despite 25 points from Aaliyah Edwards and 19 from Lou Lopez Senechal

Grade for the Week: A-

That 9-point second quarter for the Huskies is going to haunt them because they have the Gamecocks on their toes early on but being tied at the half was deflating. But you have to remember, this team is without three potential starters in Azzi Fudd, Paige Bueckers, and Caroline Ducharme. It’s an impressive showing for the team against the best program in the country and they’re still unbeaten in Big East play and in contention for a 1 seed in March.

The Huskies will go on the road to take on Marquette and Georgetown this week. They played both of them already but neither was blowouts and the Golden Eagles are a dangerous opponent that has won 4 of the last 5 games and has a talented guard in Jordan King (16.2 ppg)
