Mike Brey has been one of the top NCAA Basketball head coaches of the past decade. He’s the all-time winner at Notre Dame, amassing 482 total wins and 13 trips to the NCAA Tournament. He and the Irish made back-to-back trips to the Elite 8 in 2015 and 2016 and was ranked as high as No. 4 in the AP poll.
Including his five seasons and two trips to the Big Dance at Delaware and Brey has 581 total wins as a D-I head coach and a resume worthy of Hall of Fame consideration. But there’s also the recent years at Notre Dame, which includes just one NCAA Tournament appearance in five years heading into this season.
And the 2022-23 campaign has been nothing short of a disaster, with the team currently 10-15 overall and 2-12 in ACC play, tied for second-worst. And with almost the entire rotation being seniors and a full turnover set to occur. This was as good a time as ever for a change, with Coach Brey set to step down at the end of the year.
The thought was that he would simply retire and head off to the sunset. But the 63-year-old seems to have other plans after this year. It makes sense in multiple ways, as his days with Notre Dame were clearly coming to an end but he deserved better than to be “fired”. They can part ways and Coach Brey can now find a new job that makes sense for him.
But what are those? There are a few current openings but as every NCAA Basketball coaching carousel shows, more openings will always occur. Looking at some potential jobs being available a month from now, here are three that could very well be in the picture for Mike Brey.
