NCAA Basketball: 10 coaches that may get fired or leave after 2022-23 season
Wayne Tinkle – Oregon State Beavers
How much do a shocking conference tournament title and an Elite 8 run do for a head coach in terms of job security? Coach Tinkle is a great example of that, as he was potentially on the hot seat before that epic month in 2021. But the year after was historically awful, going 3-28 last season and 1-19 in Pac-12 play.
The Beavers had to completely rebuild the roster and didn’t have much talent. The injury to Georgia transfer Christian Wright caused even more problems for them to start the year. But to their credit, they’re 10-16 overall, and 4-11 in league play. That’s still good for second-to-last in the standings but to some degree, have overachieved.
But is that the standard that Oregon State wants to have? A good case can be made that Tinkle wouldn’t even be head coach had they lost one of those games in the Pac-12 Tournament and they’re not getting any talent that can be competitive in a conference that isn’t strong outside of the top tier.
A recent extension has him on contract for the 2026-27 season and there’s a buyout to deal with. But if Tinkle isn’t the guy, the Beavers are going to have to bite the bullet eventually. If there’s no hope of the program moving up, they may make a move now if there’s a reasonable candidate that they can get.
