NCAA Basketball: 10 coaches that may get fired or leave after 2022-23 season
Isaac Brown – Wichita State Shockers
Coach Brown’s story is a unique one in that he took over unexpectantly for Gregg Marshall after he was fired due to allegations of abuse towards players. As the interim, Brown led the Shockers to an AAC regular-season title and a surprising bid to the NCAA Tournament. He was awarded a full-time head coaching contract to lead the program.
Wichita State hasn’t had that kind of moment since, including a 15-13 campaign a year ago and finishing 7th in the AAC despite having plenty of talent. The players wanted Coach Brown to have the gig but five of the team’s top seven scorers opted to either go pro or enter the transfer portal.
With a completely rebuilt roster, the Shockers have been okay. They’re currently 13-12 on the season and 6-7 in league play. They’re playing around preseason expectations but the problem is that under Marshall, they were regularly competing for league titles and making the NCAA Tournament.
Right now, they’re a complete afterthought and staying in an AAC that could be a one-bid league going forward. It’s hard seeing Coach Brown having Wichita State back into national relevancy and the admin, who may have had their hands forced in the initial decision to fire him, could opt to make another move if no progress is being shown.
