Pittsburgh Panthers

The Panthers are one of the biggest surprises in all of NCAA Basketball and have crashed Bracketology altogether. They’re third in the ACC with a 13-4 record, and 20-8 overall. They have wins over NC State, Miami, Wake Forest, Virginia, and twice over North Carolina. In any other year, that kind of resume should have them around a 5/6 seed.

Yet right now, the Panthers are still somewhat on the bubble as a projected 10 seed in some Bracketology fields. It’s weird because the reasons for it aren’t fully clear like it is for Clemson, who has three Quad 4 losses to this point. Pitt only has one, a home loss to Florida State.

Part of it is that the metrics aren’t fans of this ACC program. They had just one win over a team ranked higher than 200 in the non-conference, a 30-point blowout win over Northwestern on the road. The losses included blowouts to Michigan and West Virginia, as well as a defeat to VCU without its best player.

The ACC being down overall doesn’t help matters for Pittsburgh and that combined with the rough 1-3 start seems to have limited their Bracketology ceiling. But unless they were to lose out, this team should be in the NCAA Tournament. The metrics may say that they’re on the bubble but overall have the quality wins needed to not have to sweat it out.
