Best memes and tweets reacting to Kihei Clark pass that led to Furman upset win
By Josh Hill
We didn’t have to wait long for the first major upset in March Madness as brackets around the country busted and memes were set free after Virginia lost to Furman.
Did you hear that sound? It was likely one of two things: the shriek of Virginia Cavaliers fans shouting in disbelief or the crackling of brackets busting all across the country.
All it took was the first slate of games on Thursday for the first March Madness upset to occur. Furman upset Virginia to knock the Cavaliers out of the NCAA Tournament in Round of 64 in the school’s first appearance in the big dance in over 40 years.
Big yikes, Virginia.
Everyone is always looking for upsets in the first round of the tournament, and Virginia is particularly well-built for early exits. They were on the wrong side of the biggest upset in tournament history a few years ago, and once again find themselves going home early after losing to an underdog.
Furman held firm for most of the matchup, but things swung out of control. Virginia guard Kihei Clark turned the ball over with a wild pass that turned the ball over and gave Furman a chance to hit they kind of three pointer that hits so much harder this time of the year.
Virginia had one more possession but couldn’t take the lead back, and their season — and Clark’s career at the school — ended.
UVA Basketball Twitter was in shambles after Kihei Clark’s mistake
It was Clark’s goof that set Twitter ablaze with meme reactions from all corners of the internet. Specifically, Virginia fans couldn’t believe what they had just witnessed from someone who once took them to great heights.
Unfortunately, the meme game was strong in the wake of Clark’s mistake and Twitter comedians had a field day.
As easy as it is to troll Clark after making such a big mistake, it’s worth noting that a different pass will — and should — define his time at Virginia. We’re less than a few years removed from Clark making another huge pass in a massive game, one that helped the Cavaliers win the national championship.
That’s Clark’s legacy, and no first-round mistake will change that.
Who beat Virginia as a 16 seed?
The upset loss to Furman no doubt brings up bad memories of another infamous March Madness loss by Virginia.
A handful of years ago there was a commercial for some tech company that based an ad around making sure you have access to communication for when the unexpected happens. One example that was given was being there when a 16 seed beats a 1 seed in March Madness.
Not long after that, it happened. In 2018, Virginia became the first No. 1 seed in NCAA Tournament history to lose its first round matchup.
UMBC was the school that beat Virginia that year, and while they didn’t make it much further than its upset over the Cavaliers, its job had already been done.
