Purdue became just the second No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 16 seed in March Madness history and the memes were not kind to the Boilermakers.

Purdue? More like Purdon’t.

Last year the Purdue Boilermakers went home in the Sweet Sixteen after losing to Saint Peter’s, who turned out to be the Cinderella of March Madness.

Unfortunately for fans things didn’t go much better this year. In fact, somehow things went even worse than losing to a No. 15 seed on the second weekend of the tournament.

Purdue became just the second school in NCAA Tournament history to lose to a No. 16 seed. Fairleigh Dickinson upset the Boilermakers on Friday and busted brackets everywhere in the process.

It’s nearly impossible to overstate how insanely unprecedented this is. There were commercials five years ago using the idea of the No. 16 seed winning a first-round game as a thing so unimaginable that you needed to make sure you had access to special technology so you didn’t miss history.

Now it’s happened twice since 2018, after not having happened once during the entire history of the tournament.

Even when Virginia lost to UMBC, it felt like the sort of thing that probably wouldn’t happen again. No one told Fairleigh Dickinson, though, and Purdue is on the wrong side of history in the worst way.

Big Ten schools already had a bad reputation this time of year, and this loss takes the trope about their performance in March Madness to the absolute extreme.

Needless to say, folks had a field day with it.

Making matters even better for the world of content but worse for Purdue is the fact that FDU apparently called the game before the matchup had even started.

As if losing to a No. 16 seed wasn’t already bad enough, that’s cold-blooded.
