Duke Basketball: 2022-23 season review after loss to Tennessee, offseason storylines
It was a new era at Duke Basketball for Jon Scheyer, who took over for Hall of Fame legend and longtime head coach, Mike Krzyzewski. But despite the change at the top of the program, the expectations of the fan base and the media weren’t going to slide down.
And that’s because the roster still had plenty of talent, including yet again, the No. 1 overall recruiting class. It featured five-star prospects such as Kyle Filipowski, Mark Mitchell, Dariq Whitehead, and Dereck Lively. Most of them dealt with injuries, which affected the ceiling of the Blue Devils all year.
In what was by all accounts, a mediocre year in the ACC, Duke was in the middle. But a late-season run got them into the double-bye of the conference tournament, where they won three games to win the title, including over Virginia in a revenge matchup after a controversial loss to them a month prior.
The Blue Devils got a 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament and had one of the most impressive first-round victories. They beat Oral Roberts, 74-51, led by 23 points from Jeremy Roach. In the second game against Tennessee in the Round of 32, they had to play without Mitchell, who had a last-minute injury that took him out of competition.
The Blue Devils weren’t able to overcome that loss, falling to the Vols, 65-52. Tyrese Proctor was who led the team in scoring, with 16 points. It brings the season to the end for Duke Basketball, finishing with an overall record of 27-9.
So was the season successful for the Blue Devils? And is Coach Scheyer the man for the job? Here’s a look at the overall review and what to expect during this offseason.
