Duke Basketball: 2022-23 season review after loss to Tennessee, offseason storylines
What does Duke Basketball need the most if they go into the portal?
The numbers don’t show it but the additions of Grandison and Young were successful from the portal. When the team was battling injuries, those two started and played key roles in the non-conference and kept the team afloat. And with “getting older” becoming more and more of the goal in college basketball, expect Duke to try to add a guy or two.
The problem for them is that while the season is officially over, there are a ton of decisions to make. Technically speaking, there are 15 players currently committing to play for the 2023-24 season, so two need to either go pro or transfer out in order to get even, and 3-4 to make them able to land a veteran or two. A pair of names to watch are Jaylen Blakes and Jaden Schutt, who could become the odd men out with the arrivals or Foster and McClain in the backcourt.
When it comes to needs, shooting is the immediate answer. Overall, they were average from three-point range and are likely losing their lone above-average shooter from deep in Whitehead. Roach and Proctor aren’t great shooters and are previously mentioned, Filipowski needs big improvements just to be average. A replacement for Grandison would be ideal for that. Also, they may need a rim protector in case Lively leaves, unless they feel that Christian Reeves is someone that can get minutes next year. Unless he opts for the portal as well.
This is going to be an incredibly interesting offseason for Duke Basketball, where there are a ton of decisions to make that can go a number of ways. All eyes need to be on what Flipowski and Proctor do, which could create a domino effect for the next couple of months.
