Maryland Basketball suffered its first offseason loss with redshirt freshman wing Ike Cornish entering the transfer portal. The news was first reported by 24/7 High School Hoops on Twitter and sourced from Cornish’s AAU coach, Dwayne Wise.

Cornish, a four-star recruit hailing from Baltimore and Legacy Early College in South Carolina, spent two years with the Terrapins. He was the No. 113 overall recruit in the 247Sports Composite rankings and part of the last UMD class recruited by Mark Turgeon. Having received a number of high-major offers coming out of high school, including the likes of Xavier and Rutgers, the 6’6″ wing will likely garner a fair amount of interest in the portal.

Cornish redshirted his true freshman season due to injury and did not see the floor. This past season, he logged 4.8 minutes per game over 21 games. In that time, he averaged 1.4 points on 35.7% from the field and 18.8% from three. His last appearance of more than 10 minutes was February 4 in Maryland’s dominant win at Minnesota. Cornish hits the portal with three years of eligibility remaining.

This is the first domino to fall as Kevin Willard begins to figure out Maryland’s roster for next season. Jahmir Young, Hakim Hart, and Donta Scott all have remaining eligibility, but there is no word on whether any of those three plan to exercise it and stay at UMD. If all three opt not to return and 2023 center Braden Pierce officially signs on, the Terps will have two open scholarship spots assuming no other departures.

Maryland Basketball finished this season with a 22-13 overall record and 11-9 mark in Big Ten play. They entered the 2023 NCAA Tournament as the No. 8 seed in the South Region, defeating No. 9 West Virginia in the Round of 64 before falling to No. 1 overall seed Alabama in the Round of 32. Looking ahead to 2023-24, Maryland has the No. 16 incoming class per 247Sports.
