NCAA Basketball: 8 teams that should target Western Kentucky transfer Dayvion McKnight
Illinois Fighting Illini
Plenty of things didn’t work out for the Fighting Illini this season and one big reason was the point guard play. Former top-30 prospect Skyy Clark left the team midway through and eventually transferred. And while Jaylen Epps showed potential, he got benched in the postseason in favor of just letting Terrence Shannon Jr. having the ball.
McKnight would clean up the backcourt and become the lead guard on Day 1. And if Shannon leaves after his 4th year, he also can be their leading scorer as well, killing two birds with one stone. And even though Coach Brad Underwood comes off as super hard on his players, he does give them freedom on offense, which is what the former Hilltopper will need in order to succeed.
Louisville Cardinals
As one of the hometown options available, Louisville almost makes a ton of sense for the Kentucky native. After winning just four games total, the Cardinals are going to need as much talent as possible and McKnight is very capable of playing at the ACC level.
The reason why I used “almost” is that Louisville already added one guard in Skyy Clark from Illinois, who will be expecting to start. They still have El Ellis, who has one more year of eligiblity left if he opts to use it. If that happens, the backcourt may be too crowded to make it work. But considering that the main critisizim of the team was the lack of guards all year, I can’t blame them from getting as much talent as possible.
