There’s a new era at Syracuse, starting this offseason. Jim Boeheim, one of the top NCAA Basketball head coaches of this era, is out after 47 seasons and a national championship. Longtime assistant Adrian Autry was named as his replacement, which means there’s likely some roster moves that need to be made.
That includes the backcourt, where a pair of notable moves have already occured. One was the announcement that JJ Starling, a freshman starting guard at Notre Dame, woud be transferring to the Orange closer to home. The other news was that Judah Mintz, the freshman starter for Syracuse, would be going through the NBA Draft process but if he comes back, it’ll be for them.
If Starling and Mintz are on the roster together, that makes it crowded. But now, there has been some more news, with Joe Girard making his own announcement.
Whether he stays in the NBA Draft or in the transfer portal, Girard won’t be at Syracuse anymore. He’s not a projected NBA Draft pick at all so barring a surprise decision, he very well could be back for a 5th-year at NCAA Basketball. The 6’3 guard is coming off a career 16.3 ppg season, making 38% from three-point range.
Girard is a sharpshooter, capable of making 6+ threes in a given game. His has such as quick release that defenders can barely contest at times. With shooting always at a premium in the sport, expect him to get a ton of attention in the portal.
Here’s a look at eight programs that should consider Girard.
