The UConn Huskies are the only team in the 2023 Final Four who have been this far in the tournament before, and they want to keep building on an impressive history there.
For FAU, San Diego State, and Miami, making it to the Final Four is all-new territory. But for UConn, this is well-traveled ground and their rate of success in this stage of the tournament is nearly unmatched.
UConn’s path to the 2023 Final Four may not have looked difficult with the Huskies knocking off No. 13 seed Iona, No. 5 seed Saint Mary’s, No. 8 seed Arkansas, and No. 3 seed Gonzaga all in impressive fashion with an average margin of victory of 22.5 points, but it wasn’t because their opponents were lacking.
The Huskies look to be just that damn good.
Now UConn looks toward a matchup against the No. 5 seed Miami Hurricanes for a shot at another national title — the fifth in school history if attained — and if history is any indicator, the Huskies have a good shot at doing just that.
What is UConn’s Final Four all-time record?
UConn has advanced to the Final Four in six NCAA Tournaments — 1999, 2004, 2009, 2011, 2014, and 2023. In the first five appearances, the Huskies are 4-1, and won the national title all four times they advanced to the championship game.
That’s an impressive record no matter how you look at it.
Their only Final Four loss was in 2009 when the Huskies lost to Michigan State, 82-73. The Spartans then went on to lose in the national championship game to North Carolina.
As a No. 1 seed in 1999, UConn beat Ohio State in the Final Four, 64-58 and then defeated Duke in the championship game, 77-74.
In 2004, as a No. 2 seed, the Huskies took down Duke in the Final Four, 79-78, and then burst Georgia Tech’s bubble in the championship game, 82-73.
The Huskies were a No. 3 seed in 2011 when they toppled Kentucky in the Final Four by a slim 56-55 margin, and then dominated Butler in the championship game, 53-41.
Their most recent trip was in 2014, where as a No. 7 seed, the Huskies beat Florida, 63-53, and then went on to beat Kentucky once again in the championship game, 60-54.
Can UConn continue this trend of success against a never-say-die Miami Hurricanes team? It could end up being on of the best games of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
UConn and Miami will tip off at 6:09 pm ET on CBS at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.
