NCAA Tournament 2023: Ranking each of the Final 4 teams – who is No. 1?
By Joey Loose
After nearly five months of NCAA basketball action it’s all come down to this. The culmination of years of hard work, practice, recruiting and coaching have led four teams on the doorstep of eternal glory in college basketball. We are down to the last four teams in the nation, with the Final Four due to take place this upcoming Saturday. Suffice to say, the 2023 NCAA Tournament has been jam packed with surprises.
For the first time in the history of the Tournament, there are no 1, 2, or 3 seeds in the Final Four. This was the first year where all of the 1-seeds were out before the Elite Eight, and we have a pair of mid-majors matching up on one side of the bracket, the first matchup between two mid-major teams in twelve years. Three of the four teams are also making their first Final Four in program history. That being said, it’s hard to consider any of these unexpected runs as Cinderella journeys.
Both Florida Atlantic and San Diego State are certain surprises, but both teams had fantastic seasons and sat in the Top 25 of both the AP poll and most metrics at the start of the NCAA Tournament. Even though Miami has made their first Final Four, they were just in the Elite Eight last season and are one of the most talented teams in the nation. Connecticut looked dominant at times this season and was a power all year in the Big East, even if they got just a 4-seed for their efforts.
There is a lot more to say about all of these teams, and we’re going to do our best to rank these four teams in the process. Putting these teams in order isn’t an easy exercise, as these four teams have truly proven that they belong here on the biggest stage in the sport. This isn’t a disappointing Final Four because the 1-seed’s and the Blue Bloods and some of the other stronger programs are out; instead we’re in for a real treat on Saturday night. Let’s get into those teams, keeping in mind that these rankings have often been wrong in this Tournament.
