FAU Basketball: 3 keys for Final Four matchup vs San Diego State Aztecs
By Bryan Mauro
FAU Basketball heads into the final four with the most wins in the country. The Owls are going to be considered this year’s Cinderella team but it is hard to be a Cinderella when you are 35-3. Even though they received a 9 seed in the NCAA tournament and secured the automatic berth into the NCAA tournament, it does appear that Florida Atlantic may have been slightly under-seeded heading into the Big Dance. Nonetheless, the Owls have done what they needed to and now sit 2 wins away from a National Championship.
The run that Florida Atlantic is on comes as a surprise to most of the casual basketball fans, but as the year wore on and the Owls started to win more and more this run should not have been unexpected. They were a trendy pick into the Sweet 16 but not many thought they would make it past that point. If not for a last-second basket in their first-round game against Memphis the Owls would already be at home. Florida Atlantic takes the floor on Saturday night in their first-ever final four against another team making their first appearance in the final four in the San Diego State Aztecs.
The Owls are going to face their toughest challenge so far in the tournament as San Diego State is a bad matchup for every remaining team in the tournament. The Owls are a confident bunch and can still win the game. However, they must do three things to win the game and if the Owls are able to accomplish these things, they will have a great chance of advancing and playing for their first title in school history. If the Owls make the finals that would mean that the Conference USA would have a team playing for the title in all the postseason tournaments. The league was a lot better than was given credit for.
