Fans on Twitter were livid with referees after a Caitlin Clark technical foul was called late in the game and seemed to impact the outcome of the National Championship.
March was truly madness on Sunday during the National Championship game between Iowa and LSU. Caitlin Clark, who had been absolutely burying the rest of college basketball with her dominant play, was called for a late foul that seemed to swing the game in LSU’s favor and impact the outcome of the season’s biggest game.
With LSU starting to run away with the lead in the third quarter, Clark was called for a technical foul after she threw the ball behind her back after the conclusion of a play. The whistle had been blown, so the play was dead, but Clark was T’d up and momentum further swung the way of the Tigers.
Here’s the foul, you be the judge:

"No player in this game should get a technical foul for that." - @RebeccaLobo pic.twitter.com/qQuJD6bUTz
It was more than just the softness of the call, it was the context of it that mattered. That was Clark’s fourth foul, and it came with more than a quarter-and-a-half of basketball left. That meant the best player in the country was going to need to throttle down in order to avoid fouling out too early, which is why the call drew such ire from fans.
Needless to say, Clark getting called for a technical foul didn’t sit well with fans watching an otherwise phenomenal game.
Fans rip referees over Caitlin Clark technical foul
To be fair, not all fans were upset about it.
There’s a pretty large segment of fans on the bayou who probably agree with the call, but a vast majority of fans watching at home were not pleased that such a big call came at such a big moment.
Caitlin Clark is whistled for a technical foul for this reaction.

During a national championship game.
There have been bad officiating calls before.
This is the worst. pic.twitter.com/ufA120isf2
I am in complete disbelief at what I am witnessing in this game. How does that technical foul - among many others - even get consideration. Literally cannot believe this.

The technical foul call on Caitlin Clark continues to perpetuate the problem of women being held to higher standards of behavior than men when it comes to yellow cards / technical fouls penalties ect. She didn’t even say anything

This crew needs to let these players decide the national championship on the floor. Not sitting on the bench with foul trouble.

Surprise: You [the reader] just got called for a foul by the refs in this LSU-Iowa game
— Ella Brockway (@ellabrockway) April 2, 2023
It’s one thing for Clark to be called for the foul, but fans were quick to point out that the officiating didn’t seem to be completely fair both ways.
LSU head coach Kim Mulkey seemed to grab the arm of an official while throwing a tirade yet was not even talked to about the incident let alone called for a technical.
This is basically an actual foul on Mulkey, extending that arm should get called every time https://t.co/MnyjeeKirk

Truly can’t believe that technical. Mulkey has been the 6th LSU player on the court THE ENTIRE game and the refs look the other way… the best player in the country, having a historic tournament, tosses the ball away and you T her up for her 4th foul.

Just mind boggling.
Caitlin Clark picks up a technical foul.

Kim Mulkey still hasn't received one.
Absolute Shitshow.
Juxtaposed against the Caitlin Clark technical foul, that’s not a great look for officials.
It wasn’t just the call against Clark that enraged fans, as the officiating as a whole during the National Championship Game seemed to be less than ideal.

These refs out here bout to foul LSU whole team out.

The game was still an epic, and an explosive conclusion to perhaps the best March Madness tournament we’ve seen in a while. Officiating was less than great, but LSU hung 102 points in a title game, we had some epic trash talk, the nation’s best player still went off despite being held back, and the season ended on an absolute banger of a game.
