Big 12 Basketball: Ranking all 14 head coaches in 2023 after realignment
By Joey Loose
6. Jamie Dixon – TCU
Dixon starred at point guard at TCU way back in the 80’s and was actually a seventh-round draft pick by the Washington Bullets. After a brief professional career, he got into coaching, spending a number of seasons with Ben Howland. In 2003, Dixon succeeded Howland as head coach at Pittsburgh and would lead the Panthers to 11 NCAA Tournaments, including an Elite Eight run back in 2009.
TCU brought their former star back home in 2016 and Dixon has been impressive leading the Horned Frogs. An afterthought in basketball before his arrival, he led TCU to the NIT title in his first season and has led them to three NCAA Tournaments, winning their first-round games each of the last two seasons. While the Horned Frogs aren’t exactly winning Big 12 titles, their work these last couple of years has been really impressive and TCU has proven they belong in this conference.
Can Dixon maintain that momentum, especially with the talent from these last few seasons starting to dwindle? He was a fantastic presence at Pittsburgh for over a decade and continues to be that now two decades into his head coaching career. Dixon shows no signs of stopping even when life gets harder for the Horned Frogs in a deeper conference.
