It’s been a great week for the Duke Blue Devils when it comes to player decisions. They recently got back Kyle Filipowski, who led the team in both scoring and rebounding. His return puts Duke as a potential preseason No. 1 team in all of NCAA Basketball for the 2023-24 season. But not all news is great for them, as incoming freshman Mackenzie Mgbako has signaled his intention of leaving the Blue Devils and becoming a free agent.

This wasn’t a complete shock overall when looking at the No. 2 overall recruiting class, led by several five-star prospects such as Mgbako. Due to Filipowski and other freshmen players returning for another year, playing time could be a question for next season.

This makes Mgabko one of the best available free agents this offseason, ahead of 95% of transfers. He’s a 6’8 combo forward out of the state of New Jersey, playing for Roselle Catholic High School. He’s a consensus five-star and top-10 prospect in the 2023 class who was in the High School McDonald’s All-American game. He picked the Blue Devils over the likes of Memphis. Ohio State and Kentucky.

As an athletic forward, Mgabko can shoot well from deep and create his own offense. He’s a good defender as well and projects to be a “one-and-done” recruit for the 2024 NBA Draft. Look for there to be plenty of interest from many NCAA Basketball teams coming forward in the next couple of weeks.
