Duke Basketball: Impact of Proctor, Filipowski, and Mitchell back for 2023-24 season

Mackenzie Mgbako set to leave Duke Basketball
It hasn’t ONLY been good news for Scheyer’s Blue Devils, however. Following Filipowski’s decision to return for another season, five star Duke commitment Mackenzie Mgbako requested a release from the NLI he had signed with Duke in November.
Mgbako was supposed to headline another star-studded freshman class for Duke, and he was universally ranked as a top-10 player in his class. However, it’s clear Mgbako became concerned that all of Duke’s returnees would lead to a smaller role for the Blue Devils next year than what he was looking for.
It’s tough to say what comes next for Mgbako, but some have already projected Louisville as a potential landing spot. Duke will still enroll four five star players in forwards Sean Stewart and TJ Power and guards Caleb Foster and Jared McCain.
While the loss of Mgbako isn’t ideal, it’s still tough not to be enamored with what Duke is returning on paper for next season. A lot of the offseason still has to play out, but when you consider what Duke is returning paired with what they’re receiving, it’s not too difficult to envision this squad cutting down the nets in Phoenix next April.
