After another year that felt underwhelming for the conference, ACC Basketball has plenty of work to do this offseason. There have been multiple coaching changes, including losing yet another Hall of Famer in Jim Boeheim of Syracuse. The league has seen its fair share of departures to the NBA Draft and the transfer portal as well, with some teams doing a bit better than others.

With a month left of the portal being open, there’s still plenty of time for programs to get needed additions to bolster their respective rosters for the 2023-24 season. This piece takes a look at all 15 programs and analyzes the biggest needs from a roster standpoint in order to succeed. It’ll be done in inverse order using the ACC conference standings from this past season.

Louisville Cardinals – Veteran point guard, spacing forward

After winning just four games total, Louisville’s roster was expected to go through a complete rebuild. They’ve lost a few pieces as expected, including leading scorer El Ellis. They landed Illinois transfer Skyy Clark on the perimeter, along with five-star combo guard prospect, Trentyn Flowers. What they need is a proven veteran to run the offense next to Clark, who only played 13 games this past season.

The addition of five-star center Dennis Evans helps the improved frontcourt but there still are several bigs that can’t shoot, creating potential spacing issues on the court. One option that just opened up is Mackenzie Mgbako, a former five-star power forward commit at Duke. He’s a free agent now and could start Day 1 at Louisville and get plenty of minutes and reunite with his lead recruiter and now assistant coach, Nolan Smith.
