Gonzaga Basketball: Analyzing transfer targets Ryan Nembhard, Jesse Edwards and Taran Armstrong
Jamarion Sharp – Western Kentucky Hilltoppers
2022-23 season stats: 7.4 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 4.1 bpg
Between players such as Drew Timme, Filip Petrusev, and Domantas Sabonis, Gonzaga Basketball has always had elite offensive weapons at the center position. But what if they go in a completely opposite direction and land one of the best interior defenders in the sport?
What makes Sharp stand out (literally) is that he’s the tallest player in college basketball at 7’5, even larger than National Player of the Year Zach Edey. And the big man from WKU has led the nation in shots blocked in the past two years, including 4.6 a game a year ago. That includes 10 blocks in a triple-double against Alabama A&M.
Sharp is a two-time Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year player and would immediately shore up the interior for Gonzaga. He’s not going to provide much offense but with guys like Steele Venters and Hickman around (along with others), the Bulldogs should be okay scoring-wise.
As of now, Sharp’s recruitment hasn’t taken off compared to others. But after guys like Ike, Kadin Shedrick, and others make their moves, he should be able to get going. And if Gonzaga doesn’t have a big man yet, this could be an ideal match.
