Gonzaga Basketball: Analyzing transfer targets Ryan Nembhard, Jesse Edwards and Taran Armstrong
Carlos Stewart – Santa Clara Broncos
2022-23 season stats: 15.2 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 2.3 apg
The 6’1 guard had a breakout season as a sophomore for Santa Clara, going from 5.4 ppg to nearly 10 ppg more this year. Stewart shot 40% from three-point range and had 11 games of at least 20 points, including 29 versus UC Irvine. Against the Bulldogs, Stewart scored 33 points combined in two games, including a 22-point effort in the Kennel on 9/15 shooting.
Now in the portal, Stewart could become the rare All-WCC player to join the best program in the league. He already has shown the ability to flourish at this level and would have an even better case of teammates to play with.
The only difference between him and the other targets is that Stewart would exclusively be an off-guard next to Hickman. That would be a small lineup against power conference opponents but it would be potent on offense to some degree. He’d be a backup option once guys like Nembhard and Ashworth decide but the program is certainly familiar with the former Santa Clara star.
Stewart is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana so there are local options such as LSU and Tulane that would make sense. His own recruitment has barely started so again, this one may take longer than the other targets already mentioned here.
