Alabama Basketball: Analyzing transfer targets BJ Mack, Tylor Perry, and Aaron Estrada
Tylor Perry – North Texas Mean Green
2022-23 season stats: 17.3 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.1 apg
Perry is one of the few guards in the transfer portal that can say he’s a champion. The senior guard led the Mean Green to an NIT title, scoring 20+ points in four of the five games in the run. He had 8+ points in all but one game, including a career-high 35 points against San Jose State, making all seven of his three-point attempts.
North Texas played the slowest-paced offense in all of college basketball this past season. Even slower than both Virginia and Saint Mary’s. That’s what makes Perry’s numbers all the more impressive. He was the clear go-to option offensively and opposing teams knew it and still was both a prolific and efficient scorer, including making 41% of his three-point shots.
Going from North Texas to Alabama will be a culture shock of sorts in terms of styles of play for Perry. But it also could mean that his stats could take an even bigger jump. That being said, being a 5’11 off-guard could pose some problems in the SEC and not knowing what both Sears and Quinerly are doing could hurt Bama here.
His recruitment has gone slow, with visits to Arkansas and Florida in the works. There are some reported contenders like the Gators that have a clearer path for playing time but the Crimson Tide is the better team on paper.
