Auburn Basketball: Analyzing transfer targets Jaylon Tyson, Devan Cambridge, Kario Oquendo
Auburn Basketball transfer commitment – Denver Jones
If there’s been one “weak point” of Auburn Basketball over the last two years, it’s been the lack of scoring consistency in the backcourt. Green and Johnson both were capable of going for 20 points in one game, as well as just 4-5 points in another. And the inefficiency that both of them had simply lowered the team’s ceiling come postseason time.
So it helps to land one of the best scoring guards in the entire transfer portal. Jones is a 6’4 guard from Alabama that played the last two years at Florida International. He was second in Conference USA with 20.1 ppg, shooting 37% from three-point range and 85% from the free throw line. He was in double figures in 26 of 28 games, including a season-high 30 points on 9/18 shooting against Rice.
Jones is a pure two-guard that can play at the SEC level, with Auburn beating out Alabama and others for his services. Assuming that Green is gone, Jones is an upgrade in the starting lineup and gives the team a clear go-to option in the backcourt.
That being said, the Tigers aren’t likely to be able to land another guard, as they already have five-star ball-handler, Aden Holloway joining the rotation as well. There’s always a chance a mid-major transfer doesn’t make the transition well upwards but if Jones can, they’ll be top-25 good next season.
