NCAA Basketball: Impact of Kansas Jayhawks landing transfer Nick Timberlake
Impact of Nick Timberlake not joining North Carolina
One of the first teams to reach out to the Towson guard was UNC, who knew early on that they would need a shooting guard. They lost Caleb Love to the transfer portal, which could be viewed as a net plus. He led the team in scoring at 16.7 ppg but was highly inefficient from the field and reportedly wasn’t great for the culture.
But there aren’t a ton of shooting guards that can replace Love and be a natural fit next to RJ Davis in the backcourt. Timberlake would’ve been a natural option, which was why the Tar Heels were after him in the first place. Yet now they have to look elsewhere.
A case can be made that they already found a shooting guard out of the portal in Paxson Wojcik. He averaged 14.9 ppg and 7.2 rpg as a 6’4 player from Brown in the Ivy League. He shot 35% from deep in the past two seasons but is he definitely an ACC player?
The Tar Heels may not be so sure so expect them to continue looking for shooting guards now that Timberlake is off the board. Among the options in the portal, some are shooters and others are scorers. They may have to make their choice on which to prefer.
