Harrison Ingram

With Leaky Black not part of the Carolina roster for the first time since the 2017-18 season, the Tar Heels have a huge hole at the small forward spot. Hubert Davis’ top target to replace Black is Harrison Ingram, a former five-star recruit and rising junior that has spent two years at Stanford.

Ingram doesn’t possess the defensive acumen that Black does, but then again, few college players do. What he does bring to the table is a versatile offensive game. At 6’8″, Ingram is more of a point forward, and on a Carolina team that lacks a true point guard, his skill set could be just what the doctor ordered.

Ingram had an elite assist rate last season, averaging 3.7 per game despite averaging just 27.8 minutes. He’s a good athlete that is comfortable driving, posting up, and finishing at the rim. His shooting needs work though, as he averaged only 38.8% from the field, 31.3% from three, and 66.3% from the line. Still, he scored in double figures in the final ten games of the season.

The Tar Heels’ pursuit of Ingram was seemingly strengthened with the recent news that Towson’s Nick Timberlake committed to Kansas. Though the Heels were also in contention for Timberlake’s services, Ingram seems, on paper, to be a great fit for a Carolina team in need of playmaking.

Ingram’s former coach at Stanford, Jerod Haase, was a longtime assistant at UNC, so it’s fair to wonder if he’s gotten any intel on what to expect in Chapel Hill. Ingram is currently on an official visit to UNC, so let’s see if the Heels can close the deal.
