When a team has as big a breakout year as Kansas State just had, the hope is that the momentum quickly translates to the transfer portal. After winning 34 games combined in the three seasons prior, new head coach Jerome Tang took the program to 26 wins in the best conference in NCAA Basketball (Big 12), as well as making it to the Elite 8 of the Big Dance,

Yet, nothing has happened yet via the transfer portal, with the program not landing a single commitment. And it’s certainly not as if there isn’t plenty of room available. All-American guard Markquis Nowell, who led the team with 17.6 ppg and 8.3 apg, has no more eligibility left. Star forward Keyontae Johnson is reportedly 50/50 about his intentions to stay in the NBA Draft or come back, while role players Desi Sills and Ismael Massoud are also gone.

That being said, I don’t want to be on “5 alarm worry” with Kansas State just yet. They’re reportedly in the mix for two of the top guards in the transfer portal in Max Abmas, a 22 ppg scorer from Oral Roberts, along with Tylor Perry, the starting guard on the NIT title team, North Texas Mean Green.

Just landing one would be nice but they also have some work to do in the frontcourt if Johnson stays in the draft. The Big 12 will be even harder next season with Houston in town so Kansas State better get going with a couple of splashes.
