NCAA Basketball: 10 teams that still need some help in 2023 transfer portal
Memphis Tigers
Admittedly, this is a weird team to place since Memphis actually added four transfers already to the roster. The biggest of the group was Caleb Mills, a double-digit scoring guard from Florida State. The others are a pair of role players in forward Nick Jourdain (Temple) and wing Teafale Lenard, Jr. They also added 6’10 guard Jonathan Pierre, a D-II transfer with plenty of potential.
Had things gone normal for the Tigers in the past couple of weeks, they wouldn’t be on the list. However, sets of news now have in need of some newcomers. The first and most important was the recent offseason arrest of Mikey Williams, who is dealing with serious gun charges. It’s not a done deal that he won’t play this upcoming season but that’s truly up in the air.
His potential absence makes the recent de-commitment of point guard Ty-Laur Johnson all the more problematic. Plus, veteran guard Jonathan Lawson has also entered the transfer portal. This doesn’t even include the team not knowing if Malcolm Dandridge is coming back or not at the center position.
The roster for the Tigers has gone from top-25 potential to now needing a couple of pieces just to stay above water. The new-look AAC may not be good enough to get multiple bids next season so they need to find a way to win some more battles in the transfer portal to feel good about 2024.
