NCAA Basketball: 10 teams that still need some help in 2023 transfer portal
Texas Longhorns
When it comes to coaching hires this offseason, Rodney Terry of Texas may have been the complete opposite of Pitino when it comes to hype. But after keeping the program steady after the sudden departure of Chris Beard and leading them to the Elite 8, the administration had no choice but to take the interim tag off Terry and make him the full-time guy.
So now, he’s going to be judged as a leader of a top-tier NCAA Basketball program. And up until this past week, there hasn’t been much going on this offseason, outside of losing a couple of key pieces. The good news is that they landed Kadin Shedrick, a transfer center from Virginia to fill out the five-spot.
The problem is the backcourt. Without Marcus Carr and Sir’Jabari Rice around and top-30 freshman guard AJ Johnson suddenly opting to go pro instead of college, there’s no depth on the perimeter outside of Tyrese Hunter. They were reportedly in the mix for USC transfer and former Pac-12 Player of the Year Reese Dixon-Waters but he picked San Diego State, a recruiting loss for Terry.
All can be made up though if Texas were to land Max Abmas, the highest-scoring player in the portal at around 22 ppg. If the Oral Roberts transfer were to pick the Big 12 program, they’ll instantly go back to being a predicted favorite in the league. If they don’t get Abmas, the fan base could start to get worried.
