NCAA Basketball: Duke, Gonzaga, and WVU rise in latest WTE ’23-24 power rankings
6. UConn Huskies
The reigning NCAA Basketball national champions had a ton of personnel decisions to deal with and so far, half of them are clear. Joey Calcaterra has no more eligibility, while Nahiem Alleyne has transferred to St. John’s. There are two NBA Draft moves as well, with leading scorer Jordan Hawkins definitely gone, while big man Adama Sanogo has entered the process too.
Whether he stays pro or not, the odds of Sanogo coming back are slim because Donovan Clingan has already returned and it’s not for another bench role. After averaging 6.9 ppg and 5.6 rpg and below two blocks a game in just 13 mpg, he’s set to become a consensus sophomore breakout star to watch as the full-time starter in 2023-24.
The only other role player guaranteed to be back is forward Alex Karaban. UConn is now waiting on guards Tristen Newton and all-around stud Andre Jackson. If one comes back, they’ll be in very good shape. But if neither returns, lots of pressure will be on incoming five-star guard prospect, Stephon Castle.
The Huskies may have the best player in the Big East next season if Clingan is as good as we think he can be in extended minutes. So even without knowing the status of some key players, I feel good about this being a top-10 caliber unit.
