9. Virginia Cavaliers

Players to watch: Reece Beekman and Armaan Franklin

It’s been more roster turnover for the Cavaliers than usual in the Coach Tony Bennett era. Longtime starting guard Kihei Clark and starting forwards Jayden Gardner and Ben Vander Plas have no eligibility left, while big man Kadin Shedrick has transferred out, along with freshman forward and former top-60 prospect Isaac Traudt is off to Creighton.

The team has landed a trio of transfers so far. One is Jordan Minor, a 6’10 forward from Merrimack and was the NEC Co-Player and Defensive Player of the Year. Andrew Rodhe averaged 17 ppg at St. Thomas, while wing Jacob Groves started 19 games at Oklahoma last season.

It’s a solid group but two of them are mid-major transfers and this is a system that’s hard to play at a high level well enough out the gate. That’s why they need to bring back some proven talent and there are two guards in limbo at the moment. Franklin led the team with 12.4 ppg last season, while Beekman was one of the top passers in the ACC at 5.3 apg.

There’s a chance that without Clark, Beekman could have a huge senior season, and bringing back a lead scorer is important for Virginia. They have some talent confirmed on the roster but both the ceiling and floor would be higher with both of them back.
