No. 5 Hunter Dickinson transfer option – Staying home at Michigan

The recruitment for Hunter Dickinson has been a fascinating one in that there hasn’t been a clear-cut favorite, despite being in the transfer portal for several weeks. And in the back and my and others’ minds is that the door to return to Michigan isn’t necessarily fully closed.

There’s history there obviously and both the team and player have accomplished a lot. There are few head coaches that understand big men and their development better than Juwan Howard and Dickinson has improved as a prospect in each of the last two years. But after missing out on the NCAA Tournament and losing two starters to the NBA Draft, a case could be made that the big man just didn’t have a team good enough to stick around.

Have the Wolverines done enough this offseason? They made a big splash on paper, landing Caleb Love, a high-scoring, yet inefficient guard that led North Carolina with 16.7 ppg last season. They also added former five-star prospect Nimari Burnett, who averaged 5.5 ppg in 15 mpg off the bench at Alabama. He may have to sit out a year unless given a waiver.

Michigan also brought in stretch forward Tray Jackson from Seton Hall but he’s not really an upgrade over Terrence Williams but provides needed spacing and shooting at the four-spot. To answer my question though, it’s likely a wash. Had they landed Tennessee transfer forward Olivier Nkamhoua, I’d feel better about the roster. But in reality, there are four teams that stand out from the rest.
