Memphis Basketball: 6 guards to target after missing out on Jaden Bradley
Shemarri Allen – Kansas City Roos
2022-23 season stats: 17.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 2.7 apg
Allen is more of a two-guard than a natural point but he’s a capable passer as well, including 11 games of at least four assists. But he’s a natural scorer, with 25 of 29 games in double figures, with one being a career-high 34 points in a triple-overtime game against Denver. He’s ultimately a straight-line scorer that doesn’t rely on the 3-point shot and is a good slasher to the basket.
Allen has good size at 6’4 and 200 pounds and was an all-conference defender in the Summit League. If the team is comfortable with Mills and Young handling the ball, having Allen provide a scoring boost would be helpful, plus he’ll help out on defense.
Michael O’Connell – Stanford Cardinal
2022-23 season stats: 5.2 ppg and 3.1 apg
Multiple guards from Stanford have departed from the roster, including Harrison Ingram and Isa Silva. O’Connell is gone as well, starting 76 games in three years with a career 3.2 apg. That includes a career-high 12-assist game against Washington in league play.
The 6’2 guard isn’t much of a scorer but pardon the stereotype, O’Connell is both a veteran and high-IQ passer that can join the rotation. O’Connell isn’t an elite transfer target but with many top options gone, would serve as a useful playmaker with proven power conference production.
