Big Ten Basketball: Early grades for each teams 2023 offseason moves
6. Maryland Terrapins – Grade: C+
The Terrapins have been a big part of the offseason so far, mainly due to being in the Hunter Dickinson sweepstakes. Yet they haven’t done much outside of that. They lost starting wing Hakim Hart to Villanova and replaced him with Jordan Geronimo, arguably a downgrade. Chances Stephens is a good shooter from LMU but only averaged 6.0 ppg as a freshman off the bench.
The most important thing for Maryland is that it brought back star point guard, Jahmir Young. He, along with forwards Donta Scott and Julian Reese makes them a contender in the Big Ten and with top-25 potential. But it does feel as if they can do a bit more in the portal to bolster the roster after missing out on Dickinson.
5. Iowa Hawkeyes – Grade: C-
In fairness to the Hawkeyes, they weren’t going to easily replace star wing Kris Murray and senior forward Filip Rebraca. The hope for them is that Valpo transfer Ben Krikke can replace his production, backed up by Belmont transfer center Even Brauns.
But what about the others? You can see forward Payton Sandfort having a breakout year as a leading option and Tony Perkins becoming a lead guard but is he a point? Connor McCaffery and Ahron Ulis were the top passers and they’re gone. Adding another ball-handler would be helpful to solidify the roster but ultimately, the hope is that the returning players can take more of the scoring load.
