Big 12 Basketball: Early grades for each teams 2023 offseason moves
Texas Longhorns – Grade: B
No Big 12 Basketball team has had as many ups and downs as Texas this offseason. On the positive end, they landed arguably the best guard in the transfer portal in Max Abmas, who averaged over 22 ppg at Oral Roberts in the past three years. Joining him is Virginia center Kadin Shedrick, along with a pair of rotation newcomers in Chendall Weaver and Ze’Rik Onyema.
On the negative end, the Longhorns lost not only Arterio Morris to rival Kansas via the portal but also Ron Holland, a top-5 incoming freshman prospect. They’re in a position where they still need to add some depth but having Abmas alone gives them a solid grade.
Texas Tech Red Raiders – Grade: B-
The Raiders started out their offseason plans the latest of any team, hiring Coach Grant McCasland from North Texas. He wasn’t able to bring any of his players with him but has landed a trio of solid transfers. Warren Washington is a solid starting center coming from Arizona State, while forward Darrion Williams was the Mountain West Rookie of the Year at Nevada.
Chance McMillian joins Texas Tech from Grand Canyon and adds to the backcourt next to Pop Isaacs, the team’s best returning player. Losing Jaylon Tyson is a tough blow to the program and they need more talent in order to compete for a top-half spot but overall, they’ve done okay.
