ACC Basketball: Best realignment scenarios for each team if conference breaks up
By Joey Loose
North Carolina State
Where would the chips fall for NC State? If the ACC does come undone, there’s no big rescue coming, where a league is going to swallow up a majority of the teams. While it’s not something that the Wolfpack will like to hear, it’s very possible that NC State gets left out in the cold with this round of realignment, even with its rich history.
It’s unlikely, but not impossible, that the Big Ten would want to take all four of the North Carolina schools into their league. Geographically, the Wolfpack wouldn’t offer much to the ACC if they’re already getting Duke and North Carolina. From a sporting standpoint, those two greatly outshine the Wolfpack, who haven’t won an NCAA Tournament game in nearly a decade and aren’t exactly a football powerhouse either.
For NC State, an ACC collapse would be the end of something really great for the school. The Wolfpack is going to be one of the schools that really want the conference to stay together, but not all hope is lost if it does come undone. There’s potential for the Big 12 to be interested, especially when they don’t land Duke or North Carolina, to further expand their footprint into the southeast. You could also consider the SEC for this program, but their best luck and brightest future likely lies with this conference sticking together.
