ACC Basketball: Best realignment scenarios for each team if conference breaks up
By Joey Loose
Virginia Tech
If Virginia heads to the Big Ten, then Virginia Tech makes just as much sense. Sure, the Hokies haven’t had the same level of success in basketball, but have a potent football program that could work quite well in the Big Ten. As previously mentioned earlier, pairing these Hokies with Duke, North Carolina, and Virginia would create quite the new southeastern pocket for the Big Ten that could do wonders for the league.
That being said, Virginia Tech certainly has other options to consider. The Hokies could return to the Big East, which they left nearly two decades ago, but this isn’t realistic considering what they’ve devoted to their football program. Secondly, the SEC could be an interesting option, though this might’ve been the case when the program was in better shape a decade ago. There’s also the Big 12, and pairing the Hokies with nearby West Virginia.
Honestly, Virginia Tech is one of the few schools where all four of the remaining power conferences seems like a potential fit, but it’s hard to decline the Big Ten, especially if rival Virginia heads there as well. The Big Ten is already a potent basketball and football league that would get instantly better in basketball with these new additions.
