WCC Basketball: Early grades for each teams 2023 offseason moves
8. San Diego Toreros – Grade: F
There was some hype when head coach Steve Lavin was hired and they landed a few good transfers but it didn’t work out at all. Seems as if the team isn’t even trying as they haven’t landed a single player from the portal so far. They do have a six-man recruiting class but unless there are a couple of instant-impact hidden gems, it’s almost as if they’re solely building for the future.
Right now, the best players on the roster are Seikous Sisoho Jawara and Wayne Mckinney. And while that’s a solid backcourt, it’s not good enough in the WCC. Add to it a frontcourt with zero proven depth and you might have a candidate for the worst team in the conference.
7. Portland Pilots – Grade: D
I give them credit for keeping their top player on the roster in star guard Tyler Robertson (15.6 ppg and 5.3 apg). Freshman guard Juan Sebastian Gorosito has a chance to be a breakout player next season as well.
The problem is how much talent they lost to the portal, including Moses Wood to Washington and Mike Meadows to Cal. Big man Yuto Yamanouchi-Williams comes from Lamar and could start for them but all of the pressure will be on Robertson to keep them competitive in the WCC.
