NCAA Basketball: Analyzing 3 new contenders for transfer guard Caleb Love
Texas Longhorns
There has been plenty of roster transactions for Texas, especially in the backcourt. The most important thing was that they landed Max Abmas, a career 21 ppg scorer in four years at Oral Roberts. He and returning starter Tyrese Hunter is already one of the best backcourts in NCAA Basketball for next season.
Compared to both Arizona and Gonzaga, the Longhorns truly don’t have anyone good enough to start at the three-spot, assuming that former five-star wing Dillon Mitchell opts to stay in the NBA Draft. Brock Cunningham is a quality role player but not someone you want starting 25 mpg.
After losing Arterio Morris and top-30 guard AJ Johnson, there’s a clear lack of ball-handler depth. WAC Rookie of the Year and UT-Arlington transfer Chendall Weaver has potential but isn’t proven at the power conference level like Love is. You can start Love at the three-spot and have a lethal three-guard lineup, similar to what Baylor did this past season with Keyonte George, Adam Flagler, and LJ Cryer.
How the shots would work out with both Love and Abmas on board is a question but it’s not a guarantee that the former Oral Roberts guard will excel at the Big 12 level. But right now, the biggest potential role for Love is at Texas. And if you’re new head coach, Rodney Terry adding as much talent as possible isn’t a bad thing.
